CALIFORNIA – – Paramount’s much publicized attempt to reboot Heathers, the 1988 cult classic starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, came to an end this week as executives made the decision to pull the show. Keith Cox, Paramount Network president of development and production, told THR, “This is a high school show, we’re blowing up the school, there are guns in the school, it’s a satire and there are moments of teachers having guns. It’s hitting on so many hot topics. I mean, there have been 2 school shootings in the last 3 months. But when Viacom went dark for 17 minutes for the National School Walkout, we realized it was time to step up and show support for our subsidiary.”
Amy Powell, President of Paramount TV, added, “Children are our future, and as provocative as graphic depictions of high school shootings are, we are team players. There’s more material to be gained from the slaughter of teenagers than just the shoot-em-up during homeroom angle.” Cox continued, “It was a tough call, but that’s what we’re paid for, and we believe the Nobel Peace Prize Committee will get that.”
Paramount’s “13 Reasons Why,” an anthology dramatizing a teenager’s suicide and rape, and “The Alienist,” a dramatization of the serial killings of child prostitutes, are both expected to be renewed for second seasons.
